What does this job involve?
Marking out the position, shape and size of the proposed building
Groundwork and Formwork
Establishing ground levels on site and constructing moulds for concrete slabs
Constructing frames for floors, walls and roofs from timber or steel
Installing doors, windows, and fittings such as skirting and flooring
Repairing and refurbishing timber structures
Measuring and Cutting
Precisely measuring and cutting materials
Reading and following construction plans
Applying finishes and detailing for aesthetic appeal
Proficiency with carpentry tools and equipment
Instruct / supervise labourers and carpentry apprentices helping on site
How do I get into this career?
The most common pathway is via an apprenticeship. It is highly recommended to seek work experience or reach out to businesses seeking apprentices. A carpenter can also start as a trade assistant or labourer, gaining experience which may count towards a qualification in the future.
