Interior designers plan, design and supervise the construction of the inside of residential and commercial buildings to make rooms and spaces functional, safe and visually appealing.

Understanding

The design requirements by working with clients and contractors

Researching

And analysing design features, including functionality, efficiency, safety and visual requirements

Developing

Design concepts, including preparing sketches, diagrams, illustrations and plans

Negotiating

With clients, management, suppliers and construction staff

Selecting

And recommending interior materials, furniture and other products

Liaising

With the project manager during construction of interiors

How do I get into this career?

Undertake a qualification in interior design. This may be via a vocational pathway or as an undergraduate, supported by experience working in a design role. A high level of creativity and pursuing further study such as a Master of Design, may also give you an advantage.
